ESPOO, Finland -- The world's first TETRA Class 3 encryption interoperability certification has been granted to the Nokia TETRA system and three TETRA radios, including the Nokia THR850 and THR880 TETRA handsets. This important milestone was achieved at the end of July, following multi-vendor testing in early 2003. With this certification, Nokia TETRA technology now has been proven to meet the strict requirements for communications security in mission-critical government radio operations.
The Class 3 encryption is the most powerful encryption mechanism provided by ETSI TETRA standards enabling TETRA technology to meet the most stringent security needs of professional mobile radio users. Class 3 combines efficient authentication of radio terminals - which Nokia TETRA products have supported since 2000 -- with content encryption secured by automatically generated dynamic ciphering keys.
The Nokia TETRA System has already received customer acceptance for its Class 3 encryption from major network customers, making its Class 3 encryption the first and only to gain both official interoperability certification and customer acceptance in the field.
Currently, Nokia is testing Class 3 encryption functionality with a number of other TETRA radio terminal suppliers to achieve official interoperability certification with a wider portfolio of TETRA radios.
The Nokia TETRA System has also received an interoperability certificate for end-to-end encryption, which is important to support the needs of radio users who require end-to-end encryption of voice communications.
Nokia is the world's leading supplier of TETRA networks and terminals and has demonstrated an unique capability to deliver multi-switch TETRA networks with the ability to provide all TETRA services uniformly countrywide. Special features include: top-class communication security, fast group calls, sophisticated emergency call functionality, prioritized calls, advanced messaging and data communication services, including packet data. The open interfaces of Nokia TETRA solutions enable seamless integration to command and control systems. Nokia continues investing in TETRA radio technology and systems for the benefit of present and future customers.
