Sprint's Android Moment

SAN DIEGO -- CTIA WIRELESS IT & Entertainment -- Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) has become the latest major carrier to unveil an Android phone.

The third-ranked U.S. cellular operator has been showing the Samsung Corp. Moment off here at CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment 2009. Sprint plans to release the smartphone on November 1 at a price of $179, including all rebates. (See Samsung Has Moment With Sprint.)

The Moment doesn't look hugely dissimilar from existing phones using the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) open-source operating system, such as the High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) (Taiwan: 2498) G1. It is, however, one of the first Android devices to use the 3G Evolution, Data-Only CDMA technology (EV-DO).

Not for long, however: Verizon Wireless has just announced that it will soon unveil its first 3G CDMA Android devices. (See Verizon & Google Build on Android.) This means that there should be more than 10 official devices using the platform by the end of 2009:

FYI, I need to update the table when I get back off the road, seems like we're looking at 18 Android devices on the market by 2010 now.
