NSN Wins T-Mobile Austria Deal

VIENNA -- T-Mobile Austria is set to halve the energy consumption of its network as it improves the voice and mobile broadband experience for its subscribers. The operator has signed on Nokia Siemens Networks to modernize its 3G radio access network by mid-2010.

“What better way to upgrade than with a commitment to preserve our future,” said Christian Laqué, Executive Vice President for Networks at T-Mobile Austria. “Nokia Siemens Networks’ Flexi Multiradio Base Station prepares our network for Next Generation of Mobile Networks (NGMN) and delivers a completely new end user experience, while reducing our overall energy consumption – creating a win-win situation for everyone.”

As part of the project, Nokia Siemens Networks will conduct a nationwide deployment of its energy efficient and award winning Flexi Multiradio Base Station* allowing T-Mobile Austria to reduce its carbon footprint by as much as 2,500 tons per year, or the amount comparable to CO2 emissions from up to 250 households**.

The unique modular design of the Flexi Base Station – it is only 20% of the size and weight of a conventional base station – minimizes the carbon emissions generated during transportation and installation. The Flexi Base Station has been developed to work without the need for external air conditioning, typically bringing a 30% reduction in site energy consumption. Its footprint is further diminished by the fact that the Flexi Base Station, which is LTE ready, can be upgraded via remote software downloads.

In the future, once Next Generation of Mobile Networks is deployed, end-users will be able to experience mobile broadband like never before. Users will experience an instant improvement in the speed of browsing, email, video sharing, music downloads and many more applications..

Under this project, Nokia Siemens Networks Services team is implementing 2,500 base stations nationwide on a tight schedule, and is also focused on ensuring that the subscriber services continue uninterrupted and the quality of experience remains high since the modernization is being carried out on a live network. Nokia Siemens Networks is also providing T-Mobile with the NetAct network management system to monitor, manage and optimize the network to ensure high-quality services.
