Huawei Unveils Android

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. unveiled two new smartphones at the CommunicAsia 2009 show in Singapore: its first Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android phone and another handset using the Windows mobile operating system. (See CommunicAsia Preview: Green Is the Color.)

The vendor is making good on its promise to get into the smartphone market this year, saying that the Android-powered "U8230" and the "C8000," which uses the Windows Mobile operating system, will be available in the third quarter.

Huawei has been in the handset business since 2003. It has built up its brand with a focus on the lower- and medium-tier phones for emerging markets. The company’s executive vice president, Guo Ping, said in November that the company is expecting revenue from its mobile phone business to increase 74 percent year-on-year to $4 billion. Huawei had a prototype of the Android handset under glass on show at Mobile World Congress earlier this year. The vendor is now saying that the Android-powered U8230 smartphone will allow users to switch between QWERTY keyboard access or a 3.5-inch LCD touch screen. It also claims that the handset will have the longest battery life of any Android-based phone yet.

Huawei is by no means the only major manufacturer working on delivering an Android phone this year. Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT), Samsung Corp. , and Acer Inc. are developing phones, amongst others.
