Clearwire LLC (Nasdaq: CLWR) is now looking to hire more staff in Atlanta and more salespeople in Las Vegas following its recent announcement of plans to deploy mobile WiMax in these cities this summer.
The firm has posted Craigslist ads promoting an "invitational open house" on March 23 to find prospective candidates for sales and customer service jobs in Atlanta. The ads say simply that Clearwire is "coming to Atlanta" and the firm is "expanding aggressively."
In Las Vegas, meanwhile, where Clearwire has been more openly hiring for a while, the firm is looking for a number of sales and marketing people.
Clearwire announced recently that it expects to launch mobile WiMax in eight more markets in 2009, spending between $1.5 billion and $1.9 billion on the deployments. Along with Atlanta and Las Vegas, Clearwire will deploy new networks in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Dallas/Ft. Worth this year. Meanwhile, it will convert its fixed wireless Seattle, Honolulu, and Charlotte networks to mobile WiMax in 2009. (See Clearwire Preps $1.5B Deployment in '09.)
"This summer we'll be expanding to Las Vegas and Atlanta," said former Clearwire CEO Ben Wolff said on the firm's recent earnings call. (See Clearwire Swaps Out CEO.)
It is not yet entirely clear which market will go live first. Although ThinkEquity LLC analyst Eric Kainer has predicted that Atlanta will be the next city to go commercial with WiMax.
Clearwire itself isn't saying what its next "Clear"-branded market is. "I cant say more than what the company said during its earning call last week," a spokesman told Unstrung.
Nonetheless, the sales and marketing ads seem to be a possible indicator of when Clearwire is getting closer to actually launching a market: No similar postings are to be found on the Craigslist sites for Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, and the San Francisco Bay Area, all cities where Clearwire plans to have networks in either 2009 or 2010.
