Microsoft Gets Flashed

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Mobile devices will soon be able to play video from YouTube Inc. and other sources, following a licensing deal between Redmond and Adobe Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: ADBE)

Adobe has licensed its Flash Lite and Reader technology for use with Microsoft's mobile operating system and related Internet Explorer browser.

Microsoft isn't saying how soon the market might see devices incorporating the software.

Microsoft is the latest company to license the mobile flash player, following Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK), Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (Korea: SEC), Verizon Wireless , and others. More than half a billion devices with Flash Lite on board have shipped already, says Anup Murarka, director of technical marketing for mobile and devices at Adobe.

Flash Lite could become a de facto mobile standard, much as it already is on the desktop. One of the tricky things about delivering video content wirelessly to a small screen is that there is no particularly dominant standard in this young market. (See The Trouble With Mobile Video .)

There's one notable holdout, however, in the licensing field. Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs recently said that his firm wouldn't be licensing the code for the iPhone any time soon. Apple built its own application to play YouTube videos on the phone. (See iPhone & YouTube.)
