LTE: AlcaLu's Flagship

1:30 PM -- With a whole morning to wait before his company's second-quarter earnings presentation, Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) CEO Ben Verwaayen had time to get pretty psyched about the growth prospects he's spotted in his tea leaves -- so psyched, in fact, he made Wall Street's Gordon Gecko seem like The Big Lebowski's Dude.

When he got the chance to tell analysts and journalists on today's Webcast about potential technology hot spots that could help fuel his company's recovery, he really pumped up AlcaLu's LTE (Long Term Evolution) prospects.

"A lot is happening in LTE around the world, and not all of it is announced. We are extremely well positioned," stated the Dutchman, drawing a thick, bold verbal line under the word "extremely."

He also highlighted big opportunities upcoming in North America. Could the two be linked? (See AT&T: Hurry Up & Wait .)
