5:45 PM -- Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM)'s decision to walk away from its 4G CDMA ultra mobile broadband (UMA) development in favor of LTE is just another sign of the increasingly pragmatic nature of the chip giant in the 21st Century.

The company is certainly not the CDMA maven of old that held out on joining the Wi-Fi Alliance for several years. (See Qualcomm's WLAN Shoe Drops .) Qualcomm now is taking much more of a broad-church approach to radio: Basically, you can have pretty much anything you want; it's just another module in a chipset.

Take a look at the firm's Gobi GSM-CDMA 3G laptop chipset as an example of this approach. (See 'Allo Gobi.) Hell, there's even talk of a silicon deal with Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) as a possibility.
