Sprint Reaffirms WiMax Targets

3:30 PM -- Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) CEO Dan Hesse is out reaffirming the carrier's targets for its WiMax network in 2008 and beyond.

The Sprint boss told the 24/7 Wall Street blog that Sprint is on target to cover 15 million with its XOHM network by the end of the year. The operator said last week that it is planning new markets in Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia, and Providence, R.I., which are likely to go live in 2009. The plan being that these markets will then get rolled into the "new" Clearwire LLC (Nasdaq: CLWR) venture. This will eventually lead to the network covering 140 million people by the end of 2010, Hesse says.

There is still a question, however, of exactly what devices will be available for the network anytime soon. Sprint will have PC cards ready at launch, but it is not yet clear what other devices people will be able to buy. (See Sprint Plots WiMax-Powered Location Services.)
