Spring Into Rev A

6:00 PM -- Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) has just announced the first handset that supports the faster CDMA EV-DO Rev A specification -- an upgraded version of the Mogul phone by High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) (Taiwan: 2498).

"CDMA EV-DO Revision A" is a radio network upgrade to existing EV-DO systems, which are based on the earlier Revision O standard. Revision A is expected to crank peak burst rates up to 3.1 Mbit/s on the downlink and 1.8 Mbit/s on the uplink, using a 1.25 MHz channel.

Sprint first launched the network upgrade in October 2006. (See Verizon's Rev A Gets Carded.) A Sprint spokeswoman says that the Rev A now covers 13,453 cities and 234 million people in the U.S. The operator originally promised Rev A handsets for 2007. Better late than never, I say.

Thanks. The Vodafone 7.2 Mbit/s USB modem I have seems to give ~300 kbit/s uplink and ~2 Mbit/s downlink, with peaks at 3 Mbit/s.

Haven't tried VOIP yet on this new 7.2 Mbit/s release, but it works well enough for video streaming and file download. Better than our meagre connection at the office, in fact.

VOIP over 3G on my N95 handset on T-Mobile doesn't seem to work very well. I think it may be the 3G chipset at issue, rather than T-Mob.

The thing I wish 3G could sort out is the delay it takes to load web pages. It's OK, but could be much better.

I can't speak for handhelds, but since going to a Rev. A card for my laptop there is a noticeable difference. Skype and Slingbox especially run much better. Plus live video streaming of basketball games online is better, though still lacking compared to when I am home.

I'd be interested to know how well a Rev A device works, and what applications are noticably improved, or enabled, by faster uplink.

Anyone got one? Or Dan, can you borrow one from Sprint PR and let us know?
